Tough times demand tough talk ...

... demand tough hearts, demand tough songs.

Look in, to the eye of the storm.
Look out, for the force without form.
Look around, at the sight and the sound.
Look in look out look around...

These tough times demand tough men, with tough talk. I'm not seeing a bit of that, especially up there in snowflake land of Minneapolis, but not really anywhere else either.

Rock band Rush's Force 10 is from their 1986 album called Hold your Fire. I can remember the band being on the old MTV quite often back then, mostly from the albums previous, especially the one with the kid riding on that cruise missile. (That was Distant Early Warning from their 1984 album* Grace Under Pressure.)

They were no 1970s band anymore, at least from their looks. I can't remember which mid-1980s videos they were, in which Geddy Lee played this bass guitar that had the left-hand end chopped off. IOW, the winders must have been tucked inside or on the other end. They couldn't have been behind the neck, right? Anyway, it was quite the modern look, for the mid-1980s, that is.

Force 10 must not have had an MTV-like video, but here's the song:

Almost as with Journey's Feeling that Way / Anytime that absolutely must be played together, as with others named here, because Time Stand Still follows Force 10 on the album, one cannot just play it by itself. The 2nd song has a better melody, I think, and it was a hit song, too.

Thanks for reading this week! More stupidity is backed up in the pipe for next week.

* Though not as prolific as your Credence Clearwater Revivals with 8 - 10 albums in their 4 years of playing together (see Our patience for last 3 decadal Golden Earring songs is wearing thin.), Rush created 14 albums in the 16 years 1974 through 1989.

PS: I've only heard of your former city's mayor in regard to this rioting, Mr. Ganderson. He sounds like one of those snowflakes I keep writing about. That's not what the Twin Cities needs right now. Nor the rest of us, either.

PS: Usually old stings will stay in tune. Sometimes they won't. Did you stretch them?

PS: Tuners! Thank you, Adam. It's been a long time, but I have played some guitar. That's what I get for not looking stuff up enough.

You reminded me to put new strings on the acoustic some time. They've only been on there five years or so. Usually it's the new strings that can't stay in tune, but these ones can't seem to even GET in tune.

PS: Good morning Mr. Moderator...

I am indeed a rush fan and a bass player.

I've never heard them called “winders” before. I like it. It's fun.

I call them tuners or tuning pegs.

Sometimes they're referred to as tuning machines, but in most cases that just seems silly to me.

I genuinely enjoyed your Charlottesville joke. Made me smile.

I wouldn't worry about being too repetitive. You'll know when enough is enough.

May 31 to Jun 1 overnight. The pro-riots, pro-black, black-and-proud mayor of Washington DC refused to declare a curfew, then at the latest possible hour declared one but it wasn't publicized and was openly ignored by roving gangs of blacks with weapons such as baseball bats smashing store windows and looting. I witnessed many of these cases again.

Racialized and extremist arson and vandalism and looting continued, bolder than the previous night, realizing that the government was either too weak, too scared, or on their side outright -- some combination of the three.

Not quite anarchy, but a form of modified anarchy wherein the media and elites support a manageable degree of anarchy to prove the point that white men deserve eternal punishment.

A lot more can be said, but in six words, I say this: "America is Not a Serious Country."

I was more interested in the afternoon crowd, the mainly white demonstrators with their virtue-signaling, but violence always sells.

PS: I hope you will give us, readers of your site, or iSteve/A.E./Derbyshire readers on unz some on-the-scene reports from Seattle. As for the tough men, I wasn't even particularly referring to head-bashing or fighting men. We need men in high places or visible to the public that are not afraid to speak the truth. That takes courage but also some skill, as people are de-platformed all over for being that way.

PS: Mr. Smith, I figured you'd be a Rush fan (or maybe already knew that). Thanks for the info on that bass. BTW, I always called them "winders" on a guitar, but didn't know if you've got it in quotes because there's a better term used. That was pretty novel, though.

BTW, I appreciate your LOL on my Charlottesville joke on unz. That one was good enough to crack myself up with right after I typed it! (I need to transfer a few of these things over here, but they'll be repetitive to lots of the PS readers, I guess.)

RE, Tough men, with tough talk.

I was able to be witness, in person, hours' worth of the protests/riots on Saturday May 30. Of all the scenes, anecdotes, pictures, and video I have, I can say there were very few incidents involving "tough men, with tough talk."

Even the police stuck to passive tactics, but never allowed themselves to actually be picked off and beaten/killed. Their tactics were entirely defensive and focused entirely on unit cohesion. Like the battles of yore with shield lines and spears.

At several times they were surrounded but never broke ranks. Some of the most extreme, radical, and racialist protesters/rioters surrounding them were talking openly of killing police when they saw they were surrounded. I am sure they even heard some of this chatter.

PS: Top of the evening to you Mr. Moderator.

I luv this album.

That "bass guitar that had the left-hand end chopped off" is a Steinberger L2.

You are correct. The "winders" are on the other end.
