Widespread Panic - Porch Song

I was thinking about Athens, Georgia music today. That place had a good music scene, at least in the 1980s and '90s. You had REM, The B-52s, The Indigo Girls, and (help me out, people, with more) this band, called Widespread Panic.

Apropos of no stupidity whatsoever here is Porch Song from their 1st album, Space Wrangler, from 1988.

Today was a great day to be out on the porch, though.

Widespread Panic was:

John Bell – lead vocals, guitar.
Dave Schools – bass, vocals.
Domingo S. Ortiz – percussion.
John Hermann – keyboards, vocals.*
Todd Nance – drums, vocals.
Michael Houser – guitar, vocals.

* John Hermann wasn't yet with the band when this song was written.

PS: Thanks for the music suggestions, Robert and Al.

Mr. Ganderson, yes. The Allman Brothers formed in Jacksonville, Florida, but they moved to Macon, and 2 of the members of the band, Dwayne Allman and Berry Oakley died in motorcycle wrecks in Macon, within a few blocks of each other, Dwayne in Oct '71 and Berry in Nov '72.

Macon is not too far from Athens, but it seems like a different part of Georgia, uhhh, demographic wise, and the Southern Rock music scene was in its heyday a half decade or decade before the heyday of the Athens music scene - just my opinion, mind you.

Didn’t the Allman Bros have a Macon connection?

PS

A number of groups in the Elephant 6 collective spent a lot of time in Athens (although later than the period you indicated). Groups included Neutral Milk Hotel, Apples in Stereo, Elf Power and others.

PS: For some reason, I keep getting Athens Georgia confused with Jordan Minnesota.

Big Black (originally Big Black Tools) (a punk/industrial band from the suburbs of Chicago) (Kerosene is probably their most famous song) (Steve Albini --- Big Black's leader --- listed my brothers band as one of the most influential Chicago Punk/Post-punk bands) on Jordan Minnesota:
