Cuban refugees fleeing from Hurricane Ian request asylum in Florida

(I could probably do a few good Babylon Bee headlines, but this one is reality.)

It's Newsweek this time.. Man, the Lyin' Press can be really stupid, but I can't always tell if it's purposeful or not. Occasionally, lately, when I've landed on the homepage of yahoo via email logout, the stupid is so fascinating that I can't look away.

This time is was due to my going to Newsweek, still around for some reason, on purpose, to check out what I thought would be simple facts about the damage from Hurricane Ian in southwest and central Florida. Thankfully, and pretty impressively to me, nobody had been killed by the ravages of this storm, as of the time I read. Well, no, wait, yes Newsweek noted that, but then they told us that there were a few deaths of some Cubans boating to the US to illegally enter the country.

A Category 5 hurricane had just gone through Florida and Newsweek is worried about illegal alien Cubans!:
No deaths were reported in the United States from Ian by late Wednesday. But a boat carrying Cuban migrants sank Wednesday in stormy weather east of Key West.

The U.S. Coast Guard initiated a search and rescue mission for 23 people and managed to find three survivors about two miles (three kilometers) south of the Florida Keys, officials said. Four other Cubans swam to Stock Island, just east of Key West, the U.S. Border Patrol said. Aircrews continued to search for possibly 20 remaining migrants.

The storm previously tore into Cuba, killing two people and bringing down the country's electrical grid.
As if the US Coast Guard and Floridians didn't have enough to do during the hurricane and in it's aftermath, now, they've had to rescue and take care of illegal alien Cubans. Hey, I understand the idea of rescuing ANYONE in distress at sea, but I seriously doubt these survivors will be sent back to Cuba, rather than Florida. As we found out 40-odd years ago, with about 10,000 times as many hey are not driving out their brightest and best. What idiot decides to do the 90 mile or longer run from Cuba to Florida during a hurricane ... a hurricane that they know about because it just got done tearing into Cuba!

OK, what's it gonna be this time, before the let you enter the country on your own recognizance, anxiously awaiting your hearing that you will surely attend? Fidel Casto has been dead for a few years. Raul, is that the guy running it now? Who are these people seeking asylum from? "Oh, a guy named Ian. Uh-huh..." [/Bob Newhart mode]

"Martha's Vineyard could really use 7 guys like you."

PS: Greetings, Mr. Alarmist,

We didn't have any trouble with blossom end rot this year, but one day I found five tomato horn worms in the garden. The little bastards did some damage in the short time they were there. We planted cherokee and rutgers this year. They're both good producers for us. Great flavor and they work in our soil/climate. They went in a little late partly because we started them from seed (and partly because I'm lazy). (No frankentomatoes this year.) Some years if we plant too early things will rot because of the rain, but this year we could have planted early. (Would have had to water a little even.)

“What do you do with your okra?”

Mrs. Smith and I both love(!) okra. We could have pickled some, but we've been putting them in one gallon ziplocks and freezing them. (The ones we haven't already enjoyed.) We can eat it raw as we're picking or as a snack...

But most often she will make us what she calls tomato, onion and okra. She makes it different ways but she always starts with sautéing onion (usually a little garlic too), then add tomatoes, knorr granulated chicken bullion (instead of salt), pepper and okra. She (usually) doesn't fry the okra first, she simply cooks it in the tomatoes and onions (and garlic). You can add any sort of pepper to spice it up, she usually uses serrano. I guess she might sometimes give it a little shot of lime or perhaps a little corn depending what's in the fridge or what it's being paired with for dinner.

Yeah, I love okra!

Do you think you will be able to invite your wife to travel to Florida with you this year?
Or? Is international air travel still stupid? (No Vaxx No Entry?)

A 4.5% solidarity tax is the least we can do for Ukrainian Victory!
Happy German Unity Day!

Cheers to a great evening, Mr. Alarmist.

PS

Hi, Mr. Smith, et al.

We had a so-so year for tomatoes. The larger roma suffered a lot of blossom end rot despite ample water and calcium infusions, so much less sauce to can this year. OTOH, my mini-romas went to town ... like the last years, I had one plant I dub “Frankentomato” which grew 5 feet tall and was trained to go ten feet wide. I’m not sure if it’s something different in the soil in that corner, or just the angle of the sunlight.

I’d grow okra for gumbo, but Mrs. Alarmist hates it. What do you do with your okra? Mrs. A likes the cayennes and jalepeños, so we had no shortage of them. Lots of vitamin C for the cold dark winter, though I plan to decamp to Florida for a month leading up to election day, just in case the neoclowns pulling Creepy Joe’s strings decide to go nuts on the Russkies.

Wishing you all a good evening. Be sure to sing a bar or two of Deutschland Über Alles for the poor Germans who are celebrating reunification tomorrow. They’re still paying a 4.5% solidarity surcharge tax for the privilege of bailing out their poor Ossie cousins. The Germans really are the patsies of the Neoclown World Order.

PS: Good afternoon, Mr. Moderator,

"A shout out to all the Prius drivers that have helped to keep these godless hurricanes at bay." Lol...

I read the lawdog blog post, but that really had nothing to do with this video. (I came across it while I was watching gun videos.) That guy is really lucky. If just a bit more jugular was severed he'd probably be dead. In this case it wasn't a barrel obstruction, though those are dangerous too...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxZwV2u2zyU

It was a hot SLAP cartridge...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saboted_light_armor_penetrator

Just too much pressure for the barrel to handle. Here's a video where he carefully tests the rest of the SLAP rounds from that batch and then recreates the barrel explosion with an overloaded cartridge...

I'm glad our okra came out OK too. We grow burgundy okra and beans and I really don't know where else to find them besides the garden...

(Stock photos from the internet, not from my garden.)

As you know we started late this year because the deer were eating us up until I built my "deer fence" to keep them out. Usually they don't bother our tomatoes, but this year they topped them all (even killed a few) after I protected the beans and okra with that fence. (Fishing line has kept them out of the tomatoes since.)

We still got some tomatoes, but not a bumper crop like some years. Tomatoes are shot now, time to clean up that part of the yard and plant some greens, kale, shallots or some other such fall/winter crops. The beans are mostly shot but I still picked a small bucket full the other day, maybe we'll get some more.(?) The okra are still producing. I had to water last night because the hurricane didn't bring us any rain, but they're still healthy and putting on blooms. I can probably go cut some this evening!

Anyway...
I hope you're enjoying your weekend, and I hope you have a great evening!

PS: That video was pretty scary, Adam, and the guy got somewhat lucky. I'm wondering if you were thinking of this after reading "LawDog" blog on the Nord Stream pipes, in which he speculated about methane hydrate plugs, and one hitting another - a commenter noted that guns can explode this way - a bullet may be stuck in the barrel, and then someone first off another. I'm glad your Okra came out OK.

I've read about the great increase in the importation of "migrants" to the UK on VDare, Alarmist. It's getting way out of hand, in almost every western country. The Danish have some sense, or should I say, they have some control?

PS: Wow, 52. I would not have expected this many. Yeah SC got some of it, not as severe, but almost in the same place as it did with Hugo right at 33 years before. The State's gotten away with it pretty good re Hurricanes. Florence came in from the east but dissipated quickly, and that same year Andrew came toward S.Carolina from the west, but also dissipated before it could do much.

South Carolina should be giving a shout out to all those Prius drivers in the State that have helped to keep these godless hurricanes at bay.

The kind of idiot who sails three sheets to the wind.

Is the USCG running a migrant taxi service in foreign waters, like the UK RNLI, which literally picks them up in French waters and brings them to the UK rather than returning them to the safe shores of France.

PS: Greetings, Mr. Moderator,

The Bee had some great headlines yesterday.

According to this...
https://abcnews.go.com/US/live-updates/hurricane-ian/?id=90445860

Florida's death toll has climbed to 52. (I don't know if that counts the dead Cuban "migrants"?) I also heard there were a few deaths in South Carolina from the storm.

I thought Ian might pass over us bringing some rain and wind, but it moved east and missed us. Probably a good thing as that kind of wind would likely have damaged our okra.

Happy Saturday!
