I don't believe Ron Unz's theory on this, sorry. I did read about the Americans and Chinese working in cahoots on the Gain-of-Function research, which is, basically bio-warfare research. Perhaps the Chinese thought they'd do as they usually do - take the existing knowledge and build on that on their own later. There was a very readable Nicholas Wade article on the whole deal with the labs that I lined to in a post - I'll go find it if you want. The thing is, this was one of Ron Unz's pieces of supporting information. However, it DIDN'T support anything except the part of his theory about the virus having not evolved on its own, via bats and such.

Also, I remember all that "dying in the streets" business very early on that we'd see/hear of from China - say in Dec/Jan of '19/'20. If you're gonna go with Mr. Unz's writing on this, even he says that was nothing but theater. I agree on that. Could the disease have started out by killing people dead in an hour, and then get more long-term deadly? I don't know.

There is not much evidence anything in 2020 was "deadlier" than the same in 2022, but in many media markets and "social networks" The Virus gets very little coverage anymore.

I am sure you agree the whole thing is understandable as a social-phenomenon as a Panic, not as a medical phenomenon with one strain deadlier than another. While that is true (and a mundane fact about flu virus life-cycles), it is also swamped by the social effects of the Panic.

The Chinese, among world civilization's greatest and most skillful of liars or reality-avoiders, in a sense loved the Panic because it played into their set of cultural skills.

Back in the late ‘80s and throughout the ‘90s, anyone who lived in a NYC apartment building without the benefit of having a doorman would arrive to a pile of Chinese restaurant menues on their doorstep or just inside the door. The constant deposit of menus was so rampant that the infamous Jewish pornographer Al Goldstein, of Screw Magazine inter alia, had a running gag on his Manhattan Cable public access show (yes, chillun ... it was that decadent, but it was entertaining ... especially his political and anti-corporatist rants, especially those against his fellow Jews) where he showed footage of Chairman Mao with captions saying he was going to bury America with Chinese take-out menus as a pile of them was generated on screen to cover the screen in layers of them.

I think the strain of COVID loosed upon the Chinese and Iranians was not the same as that loosed upon the West ... it was deadlier, and if confronted with the Western vaxxes, it might have been deadlier still, but the Chinese had the good sense to not take the Western Death-Stabs. As we are seeing, our so-called medicine is doing a far better job of making the otherwise less-lethal strains far more infectious and even deadly for those accepting the poison versus the relatively benign impact of newer strains on those who relied solely on their God-given natural immunity.

PS: Thanks Dieter, especially for the tweet video of the kids being sent to quarantine camps. Sam J, I would understand your POV more if the Chinese were just construction these camps and preparing this and that. That's not that I wouldn't be worried for them, but it would make more sense. These people are being sent to these camps NOW. Is there a new virus out now? No. This goes on when cases of Covid-19 are found, whatever "cases" means these days and there.
