531 years ago, in 1492, Columbus and crew sailed the ocean blue .. in 3 small boats, the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria... to a new world.
It's about too late for Peak Stupidity readers who've forgotten this holiday today, but at least we'll keep reminding you, if so. I did wish quite a few people a "Happy Columbus Day". If they didn't like it, they can suck on something.
Tomorrow we'll get back to what's turning into immigration invasion week.

PS: Well, SafeNow, no matter what the man was personally like, I see the holiday as celebrating the voyage and the landing in America. Anyway, as for the Ali McGraw movie, I've heard that title but never seen it. Do you recommend it?

We haven't heard from German correspondent Dieter Kief here in a while. He has written in on TUR, but not a lot. (OTOH, he writes under some different writers whom I don't read and often gives news-links in that section.) Perhaps we could hear from him about this.

I am ambivalent about seeing the holiday get diluted 50-50. Columbus was a very very brave guy, but was flawed. The indigenous people got their continent taken away from them, but it turns out they are better off for it having happened. So it’s complicated, but I guess 50-50 is a rational, fair result. (Disclosure: I was in love with Ali MacGraw in the movie “Goodbye Columbus.”)
