Fat Bottomed Girls and the internet of Pelotons

(File photo only - not the subject of this post.)

I've been traveling some more lately, and stays at hotels have brought to mind a little Peak Stupidity material. Though we've written probably too much about exercise machines already, we'll add this one more here involving these machines as seen in hotel "fitness centers".

Peloton bike machines are appearing in these gyms more and more. You may recall a controversy from 5 years back about a TV ad for these things - see An exercise machine, Tal Bachman, and a Controversial Commercial. I'd almost forgotten that deal, which was to me a plus for the Peloton company. I like the recumbent bike machines better though.

As I sat on one to do some cardio exercise, a young woman sat on the Peloton bike next to me. No, she was unfortunately not the lady in the image above. There was the partially blue hair and nose ring and about 40 extra pounds on her. I give her all the credit in the world for making an effort to lose some though - from her clothes, it looked like she may have lost a dozen or more pounds already. Good on her, but she didn't stay on this machine long.

I figured it was broken, as she seemed perplexed by the display. She reset the power with the plug at the wall socket. No good. Her problem, as she told me, was that the machine couldn't connect to the internet. OMG! How can you possibly do exercise on a machine that is not on-line?!

I suppose she had all her previous workout data on the Peloton Cloud or something. Isn't it possible for one to just work out anyway? I'm sure the pedals would have moved without the www. For me, give me a resistance reading*, my alleged speed and/or rpm, (for a treadmill machine, speed and incline), a timer, and a heart rate readout, and I'm good. I don't need the views of rural France - I think that's where it is - and I DON'T WANT TV.

"The internet of things" is what we are to enjoy now. What would happen these days were there to be a Stonage**, with the internet going down completely for a spell? I think it'd result in all of us losing a lot of weight... but not intentionally on Peloton machines.

Forget about the internet for a while, fat-bottomed girls. Get on your bikes and ride!

As Peak Stupidity has ranted about regarding other rock songs, you absolutely can't play Queen's Bicycle Race without it being followed immediately by Fat Bottomed Girls. There ought to be a law!

Freddie Mercury was something else, but this music would still have been nothing without the great guitar playing by Brian May. He put away his aspirations to be an astronomer for years in order to stick with the band. Good move, it turned out!

Oh, and the young lady in the hotel gym got on the treadmill machine after the Peloton let her down. It'll be OK.

* Of course, it can vary between machines, but I've found that generally going for the goal of 4 minute miles for 20 minutes or so make for a pretty consistent good workout on many of them.

** ... as written of in Lionel Shriver's great prepper novel The Mandibles.

PS: Good evening, Achmed,

Thanks for the compliment. I've thought about putting together a few DailyStupids but I think instead of 13 headlines maybe 5-7 could be in order. (Quality over quantity.) And it sure would be a whole lot less work. (Spacing on the ๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘’๐‘ก. I've never even heard of that word before.)

I've also thought it might be easier to do them after the fact so I don't have any deadline pressure. I think I'd really enjoy doing a Chinese Spy Balloon edition or a January 6th edition, for example. Really any time the media freaks out about something really stupid, or there is something important(ish). (As an added bonus, I could do predictions in some of the stories that come true "later". Foresight as clear as hindsight and all that.)

As fun as the satirical headlines are I prefer the headlines that are true. (I've toyed with the idea that they should all be true. Or almost all true with just an occasional joke headline.)

In yet another stunning victory for Hulk Hogan Republicanism, Trump Taps Herschel Walker for Ambassador to the Bahamas

Natalie โ€œSamanthaโ€ Rupnow Shatters that Glass Ceiling as Horrified Nation Learns that she is Not a straight white male (You Go Girl!)

I like those because they're true.

But hey, the way things are going Trump just might appoint Chief Warren to head the Bureau of Indian Affairs. (Right after they shatter that debt ceiling.)

I'll continue some of this under the next post.

Not that they hire non-pretty girls to do peloton commercials and such. (Somehow I don't think Achmed would kick her out of bed for eating crackers and leaving crumbs. No matter what he says.)

I have never seen a Peloton commercial. I guess I could look it up, but it doesn't seem that interesting. I find it more interesting that a company can lose a Billion in market cap over a poorly received commercial. That tells me that the company was overvalued by at least a Billion. But I also find it interesting how certain companies can be rewarded or punished for ideological reasons that have nothing to do with fundamentals or profitability. (The fictionalized economy is truly a marvel to behold.)

I may have posted these before, but apparently I'm doing it again. I think Elise Trouw is cute and has a pretty voice. And the other one I just like. I think both of these are cool versions of these songs.

PS: Regarding that story of the freak accident in which the guy got run over and killed by his own stationary bike - OK, not quite like that - one does see that America has too many lawyers when he gets to this paragraph:

"Johanna alleged that there was only a single warning label on the bikeโ€™s front leg that the bike could cause injury if used to โ€œpull oneself up from the floor during a workout,โ€ and Peloton should have more adequately warned against the โ€œforeseeable misuseโ€ that people would do exactly that."

Only one single warning that shouldn't have been necessary in a country with people having lots of common sense. Uhhh, if it starts tipping over, you let go... or something? What was Peloton supposed to have done, having a running audio message, like those on escalators. (First they told you to hold on to the hand rail, then they didn't cause Covid-one-niner, then they do again.)

Oh, and the Onion news video was great! Thanks for that, Mr. Anon.

PS: I'd thought she was part .Indian, Mr. Anon, until you spelled out Miss Ruiz' name here. I don't think she's that cute, but tastes vary. I didn't know the con controversy cost Peloton a billion bucks though.

I just liked the ad for the fantastic Tai Bachman song (only song by him I know), but then too, I noted that people sometimes exercise for other reasons than losing weight. There is cardio - do women never have heart problems? Geeze, you'd think that'd have come up in the "conversation" in which Peloton got berated. Exercise can help with mental health too, bringing us back to the conversation early on here that relates to the blue-haired (partially) lady subject of this post.

I was perhaps vaguely aware of the Peloton "controversey" when it happened in 2019. By the way, the girl in the ad is Monica Ruiz, who was interviewed here on the Today show (one of the first hits from searching "Peloton Girl":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6emtEW_QeY

She is quite pretty.

Apparently, there was a feminist-driven consumer backlash against Peloton which shaved $ 1 billion off their stock valuation. Of course, within a few months, COVID happened and wiped all that away. In fact, as I recall, Peloton climbed to new heights on the strength of all the purchases made during the lockdown.

Whaaa? They both work out together on the same machine? That must be wild. Maybe I've got that wrong, but my main point here is, if you're doing cardio anyway, if you can concentrate on Netflix, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!

Never buy stuff that can change its functionality on its own. I'd have had to wrap the console part in a Faraday cage. The good thing about all this is that if I ever buy a nice commerical-grade machine, the prices should be lower on the ones that don't have all that connectivity crap. I am partial to consoles with mechanical "paddle" setting switches over membrane types, and the latter over touchscreens for all functions. Bad idea!

If you made these, I could link to a bigger file, say 1,200 pixels wide by whatever length, so people could see the whole thing together. (That splitting up was not the best solution.)

I especially liked Chief Warren for Indian Affairs and shooters shattering the glass ceiling. On that, I did read your comment on The Unz Review, Mr. Hail. My wife also had some information about this 15 y/o girl, explaining to my son about "broken homes" and such. Notice that there are no calls (that'd I've read) to tone down the ultra-feminist rhetoric. Again, it's anti-Social media for the #Loss here.

PS: I am lucky, Mr. Hail, that I shouldn't have to deal with these Cluster B types on any kind of regular basis. I'm glad that I didn't have to turn off the TV in there, as who knows what reaction that could have triggered. She was quite normal at the time.

Yes, blue hair, facial hardware (other than braces), I'd go for the last piece of advice in that Don Schlitz* song, you've got to kinow when to run.

That was interesting stuff, though the geek details are beyond me at this point, Mr. Smith. I read the 2 articles on Peloton hacking.

"The whole reason Howard bought the X32i, he says, was because he could access God mode. But the good times didnโ€™t last long." Here we go with the country music again: "Are the good times really over for good? She keeps running uphill like a snowflake headed for hell... " Some old Merle Haggard from roughly the same era as Don Schlitz/Kenny Rogers.

Were I a "threat actor" (from darkreading article - "threat actor" WTH? - these geeks have been watching too many Jason Bourne movies) who'd hacked into a Peloton Tread, I wouldn't be that interested in the personal info. OK, perhaps I'd capture a few images of AOC in her workout clothes. Anyway, it'd be more fun to take control of some of these machines. A quick ramp-up of the speed to 15 mph with the camera rolling and real-time streaming to folks around the world would be a blast. Show videos of people getting shot out of the back of the machine like tampons in a Proctor & Gamble plant. (Cincinnati, Ohio)

* Yeah, he sung it first. Then "Crossover" (from country to pop) artist Kenny Rogers, errr knew when to run... with it.

(I'm almost embarrassed that I know this, but here goes.) These words are derogatory slang for male and female from incel/femcel culture. To get into his X32i, all Howard needed to do was tap the touchscreen 10 times, wait seven seconds, then tap 10 more times. Doing so unlocked the machine letting Howard into the underlying Android operating system. This privilege mode, a sort of God mode, gave Howard complete control over the treadmill. He could load apps and, using a built-in browser, access anything and everything online. โ€œIt wasn't complicated,โ€ Howard says.

The whole reason Howard bought the X32i, he says, was because he could access God mode. But the good times didnโ€™t last long.

Since October, NordicTrack has been automatically updating all of its exercise equipmentโ€”its bikes, ellipticals, and rowing machines all have big screens attachedโ€”to block access to privilege mode. The move has infuriated customers who are now fighting back and finding workarounds that allow them to bypass the update and watch whatever they want while they work out.

Another NordicTrack owner, who asked not to be named, says the treadmill is one of the most expensive purchases heโ€™s ever made and he was โ€œoutragedโ€ when the update stopped him and his partner from watching Netflix, YouTube, and English Premier League football highlights while they worked out. โ€œYouโ€™ve actually pushed an update to stop me from doing this, which is really bizarre,โ€ he says. โ€œItโ€™s so frustrating because this beautiful screen is here.โ€

The 15-year-old girl who murdered two people at a school in Wisconsin released a manifesto in which she said she was shooting people to make a statement against males.

"Women are the only hope for this wretched world," she wrote. She soon works her way up, within the same paragraph, to: "Every single male must be wiped out, from babies to the elderly. Only then can women be free to create a new world. ill be a pioneer, ill be the first to take the first step."

(Most of her writing gets a green-flag from Wokeness; she just followed the ideas to their evil conclusion.)

"the partially blue hair and nose ring and about 40 extra pounds on her"

What is the best theory for why some Western women treat their bodies like postmodern, post-Western, post-dignity versions of South Seas Islanders with bones through noses, tattoos, and blue hair?

I believe studies have shown that Cluster-B-personality women, the most unstable and destructive women out there -- and most dangerous when they have the skills or ability to hide it a bit -- are far-and-away the likeliest to dye their hair unnatural colors.

It's to the point that if you see a wild-hair-color-dyed White woman "in the wild," it's a good bet she is Cluster-B. You can make that tentative 'call' even without making any further observations of the specimen whatsoever. It may not be true, but it so often is that you're better off. Life is always an odds game. And as a White man once sang, "you got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away" etc.
