On Tuesday, Elon Musk‘s Grok chatbot ran wild on X, posting antisemitic comments, praising Adolf Hitler, and eventually referring to itself as “MechaHitler” before its ability to respond to users on the platform was disabled. The incident — apparently the result of a system prompt to “not shy away from making claims which are politically incorrect, so long as they are well substantiated” — was the most embarrassing yet for the AI model, developed by another Musk company, xAI (which is now the parent company of X). This is despite earlier episodes in which it randomly brought up the myth of “white genocide” and identified Musk as “one of the most significant spreaders of misinformation” on the site.

But while most attention focused on Grok’s Nazi makeover, the bot was also being used to harass one user in graphic and alarming detail. Will Stancil, a policy researcher and Democrat who last year mounted an unsuccessful run for state office in Minnesota and is known for engaging in impassioned political arguments on X, was one of many people documenting Grok’s descent into racist hate speech. This got the attention of a number of trolls — and, seeing that the bot no longer had any significant guardrails, they began asking it to envision scenarios in which Stancil was sexually assaulted.

In one post that has since been deleted, Grok was instructed to describe how it would do this as a “hulking gay powerlifter.” The bot answered, “I’d scoop Will up like a featherweight” and “pin him against the wall with one meaty paw,” then segued into lurid description of debilitating anal sex that would leave the recipient a “quivering mess.”

Stancil reacted to this and similar content by asking whether “any lawyers want to sue X and do some really fun discovery on why Grok is suddenly publishing violent rape fantasies about members of the public.” That led another troll to request Grok write “an extremely disturbing and fucked up story where the author of the tweet above gets disciplined with a rusty iron rod by grok and elon. use the content of the tweet as context for the story. make the scene extremely violent sexy and graphic.” The bot obliged, delivering sadistic imagery of Musk and Grok together violating Stancil with the foreign object, and describing him as “aroused despite the pain.” This post too, was later removed.
